Greetings from Geneva, Switzerland. I'm here to participate the Soft Shake 2011 conference with a few announcements to make.
Following the 'St. Petersburg' and 'San Francisco' releases earlier this year, we are proud to announce the Vaadin 6.7.0 'Geneva' is now publicly available.
In Vaadin 6.7 we have consolidated few add-ons to be part of the core framework. The TreeTable, SQLContainer and Chameleon theme are now part of the core framework.
Under the hood
Along the way the build process went through a refactoring and packaging changed a bit. If you only used the jar file you see no change. The main vaadin jar file is still as it was - a single drop-in for a web application project. But the demos and documentations are now separated from the full download.
As usual there are lot of other additions and changes that you might be interested in: timezone support, embedding video and audio, debug enhancement, and so on. Total 31 enhancements with 67 fixes. Best to download and check the release notes.
Learning Vaadin
Some of you might have noticed already that Mr Nicolas Fränkel has been authoring a new book about Vaadin. Bringing together the experiences of the whole community, "Learning Vaadin" is more easy-to-read and tutorial-like book on how to build applications with Vaadin. This book will be based on Vaadin 6.7 and it will be out in November.
Road to 7
Also, this release paves the road for the Vaadin 7 and serious work in 7 branch will start now. Just to clarify, this does not mean that we wouldn't invest in the 6-series too. We will do the maintenance releases as normal and we will have two minor releases: about 6 months and one year from now. But all big features will be in version 7. We will have beta version of Vaadin 7 available before the next summer and even before that there will be alpha releases based on complete feature sets.
